Wondering what fashion trends are going to take off this year? Keep reading for 9 trends seen on the runways and red carpets that everyone will be adopting soon.
1) Ballet Flats
Remember in the late 2000s when ballet flats were all the rage? If you’ve been keeping a pair or two in the back of your closet, rejoice because dance-inspired fashions and ballet flats in particular are officially in style once again. Miu Miu has been the strongest proponent of the ballet flat’s resurgence, with added straps, buckles, and adornments to dress them up outside of barre class.
2) Viva Magenta
Every year trend forecasters eagerly await Pantone’s Colour of the Year, and for 2023 the color experts have declared the bright and bold “Viva Magenta” as the hue to dominate the next twelve months. From a pop of this vibrant pink in a pair of heels or manicures to wearing the color all over with a colorful dress, 2023 is about embracing bright colors.
3) Modern Chainmail
Medieval fashion, but make it modern. Designers have taken a lot of style inspiration from medieval battle styles, with the introduction of metallic lattice-like pieces in their latest collections. These pieces are great to show off some skin or to layer over fitted basics to elevate a look.
4) Boleros & Shrugs
Shrunken jackets, boleros, and shoulder shrugs are everywhere right now; think of it as the inverse of the “cold shoulder” trend of the 2010s. These are great for spring layering when it’s not cold enough for a coat but not warm enough to go completely sans a jacket. Pay attention to proportions when styling; if the jacket is tiny and fitted, pair it with wide-leg pants or a voluminous skirt.
5) Cargo Pants
Loose-fitting jeans have been popular in the 2020s, but 2023 is all about baggy cargo pants in particular. These utilitarian pants are laid-back style at their finest, and they look great when paired with a shrunken crop top that plays with proportions. Style with feminine heels and a ladylike purse to play with the mix of masculine and feminine styles.
6) Necklace-less
This is a bit of an anti-trend, but as TikTok creators such as have recently noted, celebrities are opting out of necklaces on the red carpet as of late. Instead, they’re letting their collarbones and décolletage do the talking, often accessorizing with statement earrings while leaving the neck unadorned.
7) Hot Pants
Once the weather starts to warm up, expect to see barely-there shorts and hot pants take over. We are already seeing celebrities like Kendall Jenner rock the “no pants” look-over tights, so why not go for it and bare those legs this spring?
8) Sheer Fabrics
Breezy lightweight fabrics and warm spring weather go hand in hand, so embrace the sheer fabrics and do not be afraid to show some skin. A gauzy sheer dress would look great as a swimsuit coverup, or a sheer top over a dainty bralette would look stylish as well.
9) Bubble Hems
Yes, those bubble hems that were popular back in the mid-2000s are back in! For the 2023 iteration, bubble hems are a little more free-flowing and asymmetric in their hemlines, or included in a drop-waist dress that provides a new shape.
